Muktidham & Kaumudi shows at Bareilly International Theatre Festival ‘2018 followed by shows in Allahabad,Lucknow and Muzaffarnagar
Muktidham’ is a hindi play, currently under production at Indian Ensemble, Bangalore.
The play is set in the 8th Century, during the time of the Pala rulers in East India, who were Buddhist kings. It is the story of a Hindu Matha, in a mountain town called Beerpur, whose head Mahant has resigned to the ‘Muktidham’, a place where he believes if he dies he will achieve salvation. Three men, who are acharyas, are up for a debate as a process of selection to be the next mahant. At a time when the Matha, feels threatened by the rampant conversion to Buddhism by the lower castes, the three men come up with three different philosophical leanings of Hinduism, wherein even the most radical position is not anti intellectual. The women of the town play an equally important role, in keeping the sanctity and the religious arguments of the ancient tradition. However as the town starts to get radicalized, the movement becomes violent, anti intellectual, casteist and even more patriarchal. The Manusmriti becomes the law book that governs over every other text and the claim that there is such a thing as a single ‘Sanatan Dharma’ is invented.
Muktidham is a play about love, liberation and radicalization of the Hindu religion.
Muktidham will open in January’2017 in Bangalore, followed by performances in Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune.
